1. India is expected to seal in the next few weeks procurement of 26 naval variant of Rafale jets and three Scorpene submarines from France to further crank up its naval prowess.

2. The 77th anniversary of the martyrdom of Mahatma Gandhi was observed at Noakhali Gandhi Ashram, Bangladesh on Thursday, 30 January.

3. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is currently on a four-day visit to Japan, focusing on attracting investments to his state. On January 30, 2025, he visited the Panasonic Energy facility in Osaka, where he engaged in discussions about potential investment opportunities in Madhya Pradesh.

4. The Trump administration is actively working to strengthen U.S.-India defence ties, emphasising military sales and collaborative projects. Since 2007, defence sales between the two nations have surpassed $25 billion, reflecting a significant partnership that has evolved in response to shared regional security concerns, particularly regarding China.

5. External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar participated in the interactive program “Youth for a Viksit Bharat” at Hansraj College, New Delhi. During the event, he emphasized the pivotal role of youth in shaping a developed India, or “Viksit Bharat.”

1. Eight more hostages including three Israeli and five Thai nationals were released from captivity in Gaza in the third round of hostage-prisoner swap under a ceasefire agreement between Palestinian groups and Israel aimed at de-escalating the conflict in the region. The hostages were surrounded by large crowds as they were walked to Red Cross vehicles at Khan Younis in southern Gaza amid chaotic scenes.

2. Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, BHBCUC has reported that 174 attacks on religious minorities occurred across Bangladesh over the last four and a half months, resulting in 23 deaths.

3. In the US, at least 28 bodies have been recovered from the freezing-cold Potomac River in Washington DC following a mid-air collision between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk helicopter. The collision occurred as the passenger jet, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, was approaching to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport. Three soldiers were in the helicopter. Both aircraft fell into the Potomac river.

4. Pakistan government has decided to criminalise begging following multiple complaints from foreign countries as thousands of its nationals residing abroad have been caught in illegal activities and begging. This has resulted in a major global embarrassment and visa bans for travellers from the country.

5. Authorities in southeast Australia have ordered communities to evacuate as bushfires in western Melbourne, the capital city of Australia’s state of Victoria, continue to spread.

6. Sri Lanka, Local Government elections will be held in April. Cabinet spokesman Dr Nalinda Jayatissa said.
