When it comes to creating iconic hair moments in cinema, Darshan Yewalekar’s name is always in the conversation. As the hair designer for Sky Force, Yewalekar had the unique challenge of blending historical authenticity with cinematic appeal in a film that celebrates India’s aviation heroes.
“The brief was simple, stay true to the era while making each character stand out,” says Yewalekar. “As a hair designer, my first step was research. There weren’t many photos from that time, so I relied on references and creativity to craft hairstyles that felt real and relevant to the story.”
Working with Akshay Kumar was a highlight for Yewalekar. “Akshay sir is incredible to work with. He trusts you completely but also shares insights that elevate the character. For this film, we focused on subtle transitions in his hair design to reflect his journey over time,” he explains.
Then there’s Veer Pahariya, making his debut in the film. “Veer was a blank canvas,” shares Yewalekar. “He was so open to experimenting, especially with his moustache. We went through several hair design before finding the perfect look for his character.”
Hair design for a military film comes with its own set of rules. “We had to stick to the grooming standards of Air Force officers, which meant no room for over-the-top looks,” Yewalekar notes. “But within those boundaries, we created distinct styles for every character to bring their personalities to life.”
As Sky Force garners rave reviews, Yewalekar’s hair design is tailored for Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya, Sara Ali Khan, Nimrat Kaur, and the cast is earning accolades for bringing the characters to life with authenticity and flair.
