Padma Shri Adwaree Tulsi Gowda passed away at the age of 86 years in Uttara Kannada
District in Karnataka. She is an inspiration for the whole of India and the world of how every
person holds magnificent power to contribute to the environment, society, and world if they wish
to.
Her pioneering care, contribution, and knowledge about plants and the environment earned her
the “Encyclopedia of Plants” title.
She devoted 60 years of her life to planting and growing thousands of trees in the surroundings
of Ankola.
She has received many more awards and honors for her work like Indira Priyadarshini
Vrikshamitra Awards, and Rajyotsava Award.
On the demise of Tulsi Gowda, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the passing
of Smt. Tulsi Gowda Ji, a revered environmentalist from Karnataka and Padma Awardee. She
dedicated her life to nurturing nature, planting thousands of saplings, and conserving our
environment. She will remain a guiding light for environmental conservation. Her work will
continue to inspire generations to protect our planet. Condolences to her family and admirers.

Born into a Halakki tribal family, she achieved great honors worldwide and became an
inspiration for the tribal people of India.
