Delhi: Public works Department (PWD) will resume work on road repairing and maintenance in Delhi as GRAP restrictions which were implemented due to severe poisonous air quality have lifted up. As with improvements in air quality, repair projects that had been under delay for months are beginning to move.
Focus Points
The PWD has planned to first address the high-traffic roads such as the stretch from the Akshardham flyover to Noida Link Road and parts of the Outer Ring Road. These routes are critical for daily commuters and inter-city connectivity, which have been seriously affected by potholes and surface damage because of heavy monsoon rains and continuous vehicular load. The officials declared that the potholes would be filled, and the roads would be resurfaced with layers of bitumen to make them smoother.
The 3.86-km Akshardham-Noida road will be re-carpeted with flyover repairs done in a phased manner so that the overall traffic disruption is kept minimal. Similar efforts are there on the Chirag Dilli flyover and adjacent stretches of the Outer Ring Road catering to key South Delhi habitations.
The reasons for delays
The GRAP Stage III will be implemented during the serious pollution phases. All the roadwork was suspended to add no more dust pollution into the air. In addition, the Model Code of Conduct for the general elections in early 2024 also delayed project approvals and resource allocation. Officials said logistics were a problem, noting that there were shortages in bitumen due to refinery shutdowns.
Challenges and Timelines
While restrictions have been softened, officials warn that holding on to pollution control will be a challenge in maintenance during construction. The PWD has promised to deliver large-scale repair work before 2025. Repairs would be done in batches such that commuter inconvenience would not be too much. Non-peak hours will witness an acceleration of work
Positive Outcomes Expected
The resumption of road repairs is expected to significantly improve travel conditions across the city. For daily commuters, better-maintained roads will reduce transit times and vehicle wear and tear. With smoother and safer routes, the projects aim to enhance overall urban mobility while balancing environmental concerns.
As the city gets prepared for road repairs, relief comes to residents from regular disruptions to traffic and worsening of roads across the city caused for quite some months already.
