Maharashtra: Maharashtra’s chief ministerial post has been entered into its final stage as the stalwart BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, and NCP leader Ajit Pawar will likely meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda in Delhi today to resolve ongoing deliberations about the state’s leadership, in the wake of the sweep made by the BJP-led alliance in the assembly elections.
Intense Competition for the seat
Two-time chief minister Fadnavis has high hopes for the seat of Maharashtra, while Eknath Shinde’s supporters from Shivsena are demanding and advocating for his continuation as the CM. Sources suggest that the discussions in Delhi will focus on ensuring cohesion within the coalition as the alliance moves forward with government formation.
Victory for BJP-Led Mahayuti
The Mahayuti (BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP alliance) won a decisive mandate with 230 of the 288 seats it won in the November 20 elections. The BJP came out as the single largest party with 132 seats, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) bagged 57, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP managed 41. In comparison, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi was handed a crushing defeat as Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP (SP) managed 20, 16, and 10 seats respectively.
Calls for Unity Amid Growing Speculation
Eknath Shinde came out publicly and told his followers to not converge in Mumbai, urging people to ensure alliance unity. While addressing them, he thanked them for granting him the electoral mandate and also reiterated his commitment to a stronger and prosperous Maharashtra under Mahayuti.
As the BJP top brass is finalizing their decision, everybody’s attention is still on Delhi with today’s meeting’s outcome likely to decide Maharashtra’s next chief minister.
