Delhi: Workers who work for the construction sites have gathered in large numbers in front of the office of Delhi Governor General’s (LG) and started protesting against the ban on construction activities due to air pollution. As a result of the ban, workers have suffered huge losses, and many are unable to meet even basic needs. This was a protest against economic hardship and immediate relief by the authorities.
GRAP methods for pollution abatement
The order banning construction, such as schools to go online to prevent unnecessary traffic, was passed by the Delhi-based AQI. CAQM initiated these processes to monitor pollutants such as emissions and the impact of well burning. However, this term mostly affected daily wage workers as construction work is their main source of income.
Workers demand compensation.
The protesting workers highlighted the fact that these workers have no other job opportunities. They are asking for a living allowance until their new source of income starts.
Union members said most workers were family breadwinners, and any restrictions on this trade hit them hard.
The AICCTU has called for adequate compensation and support for the sustainable livelihood of these workers.
Government response
Though the Delhi government has introduced measures such as compensation for construction workers during the ban, many say the relief is inadequate and lagging behind. Officials have yet to announce specific plans to deal with this latest protest. Critics say policymakers must balance environmental concerns with social welfare to ensure public safety and welfare.
