Manipur: It is being termed as a major political development, the NPP has stated that it has withdrawn its support for the BJP-led government in Manipur. This move, reportedly taken over the demand of satisfaction with law and order conditions prevailing in the state, has raised further problems for Biren Singh government in the state. The NPP controls seven of the 60-member assembly and was one of the principal allies to the BJP in the state.
BJP Retains the Majority
As the BJP lost a key ally, it is still in the majority by virtue of its own strength at 32. The NPF, which has five MLAs, and three independent MLAs supporting the ruling government, will not join hands with the NPP. This gives the BJP a cushion against losing its majority if the collapse continues.
Breaking the Coalition
This marks fresh cracks in the ruling coalition with the NPP emerging as the second party to withdraw after the similar withdrawal of a Kuki People’s Alliance, which had withdrawn its two MLAs back in August 2023. While these withdrawals do not pose any threat to the numerical majority of the BJP, it indeed signifies internal dissent and dissatisfaction among the partners of the coalition.
Immediate Consequences
The withdrawal of the NPP has created huge speculations over the long-term stability of the BJP-led government in Manipur. Although in sheer numbers, it now benefits the BJP, growing dissent inside its allies will pose a challenge in governance and coalition management going ahead. Analysts feel that what is essentially required to sustain the coalition is the reparation of the basic discontent, especially in law and order.
Thus, withdrawal of support by the NPP has been an important moment in Manipur’s political history. Even though, for the time being, the BJP-led government appears to be stable, this move has the same impact-the ruling party is further pressurized to resolve the issues of its allies and properly govern the state.
