1. Cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ to make landfall in West Bengal and Odisha between today night and Friday morning. Cyclone Dana, named by Qatar, carries the meaning of “generosity” in Arabic. The name also symbolises “the most perfectly sized, valuable, and exquisite pearl” in Arabic.

2. NDRF has deployed 20 teams in Odisha and 13 in West Bengal ahead of landfall of cyclone ‘Dana’. The Railways will establish nine round-the-clock dedicated war rooms to promptly restore rail services amid the red alert along the east coast in the wake of cyclone DANA.

3. Delhi’s air quality continues to remain in the ‘very poor’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index in the national capital was recorded at 367.

4. As political activities in Maharashtra gain momentum, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has declared its first list of 65 candidates for the assembly polls. The party has fielded Kedar Dighe against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde from his stronghold, the Kopri-Pachpakhadi assembly constituency. Aditya Thackeray will enter the fray from Worli.

5. Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said that seven thousand temporary houses will be constructed for internally displaced persons (IDPs) presently residing at various schools and colleges.

6. The World Meetei Council has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to replace Manipur’s Chief Minister N Biren Singh due to his failure to restore normalcy after 17 months of unrest. The letter cites ineffective governance and security measures, leading to continued violence and widespread displacement.

7. The Ministry of Textiles organized an interactive Session with Foreign Missions in India for Bharat Tex 2025 at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi on 22 Oct. The event saw participation from over 30 Foreign Missions.

8. Jharkhand Mukti Morch (JJMM) has fielded Mahua Maji from the Ranchi assembly constituency for assembly elections. The JMM has released the names of 36 candidates so far. Congress has also released the names of 21 candidates, while RJD has released the names of six candidates.

9. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has recently announced plans to create a law encouraging residents to have more children. He highlighted a population deficit, stating that fewer than two children per family leads to a rapid decline in the young population. Concerns have arisen in Southern states about reduced parliamentary representation due to lower fertility rates.

10. Madhya Pradesh government has decided to provide various facilities to the minor rape victims. The objective of the scheme is to provide protection to the victims of sexual crime under the POCSO Act and financial assistance from the Nirbhaya Fund of the Central Government.

11. The Uttar Pradesh government has given the green light to the Noida Master Plan 2041, which focuses on expanding the Dadri-Noida-Ghaziabad Investment Region (DNGIR). A key feature of this plan is the approval of a 16-kilometer expressway, set to become the state’s shortest expressway. This new road will link the upcoming Noida International Airport in Jewar to New Noida.

12. Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former minister C P Yogeeshwara on Wednesday quit his party and joined the Congress, which is now expected to field him in the November 13 assembly bypolls from Channapatna.

13. In Mizoram, Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati said that Mizoram can proudly be proclaimed as an “island of peace.” The Governor was speaking at the Bharat Ko Jano programme in Kolasib District of Mizoram.

14. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) Chief Lalu Prasad’s intervention has led to a resolution in seat-sharing discussions with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly election.

1. The Allahabad High Court rejected the plea in the ongoing Mathura Shahi Eidgah-Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi dispute, seeking the withdrawal of a previous court order that mandated a simultaneous hearing of all related civil cases.

2. The Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Lucknow has convicted Rajakbhai Kumbhar, the second key accused in a case involving espionage activities backed by Pakistan.

3. Ban On Firecrackers :
Many States, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, have taken proactive measures by imposing an immediate ban on the production, storage, sale, and use of firecrackers. The rules have been laid out with most States permitting the bursting of green crackers between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. in view of the worsening air pollution situation until 1 January 2025.

4. The Bombay High Court has granted bail to gangster Chhota Rajan, who was convicted in the murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty in 2001. On 30 May this year, Chhota Rajan and others were convicted by a special MCOCA court, and Rajan was sentenced to life imprisonment.

5. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the under-construction building which collapsed in Bengaluru on Tuesday was illegal and strict action will be taken against its owner. Meanwhile, seven more bodies were recovered during search and rescue operation after an under-construction building collapsed at Babusapalya in Bengaluru, taking the death toll to eight.

6. The police have arrested four more persons in the Nationalist Congress Party leader Baba Siddique’s murder case, including a Haryana native suspected to be an important link between a shooter and the mastermind of the conspiracy.

7. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed before the Karnataka High Court challenging a recent tender invitation issued by the state-run Canara Bank for procuring credit, debit and pre-paid (EMV) cards.

1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has expanded its ‘Alert List’ of unauthorized forex trading platforms by adding 13 new entities, bringing the total to 88.

2. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said, the Ayushman Bharat Scheme is a leading social security programme with over 63 million people having benefited from it. She said, the scheme covers all individuals over 70, regardless of background. She said this during an interaction session at the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania in USA.

3. In a significant development for international financial cooperation, Israel has become the newest non-regional member of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

4. Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has been recognized with the prestigious SHRM HR Excellence Awards at the SHRM India Annual Conference 2024 in New Delhi. The company received accolades in two significant categories: ‘Excellence in Inclusion, Equity & Diversity’ and ‘Excellence in Managing the Distributed Workforce.’

5. India’s diesel consumption is projected to increase by 3-4 per cent in the current financial year, V Satish Kumar, Chairman of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) told.

6. HSBC Holdings has made history by appointing Pam Kaur as its first female Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective January 1, 2025. Kaur, a 60-year-old British Indian veteran in the financial sector, succeeds Georges Elhedery, who became CEO earlier this year.

1. Aamir Khan is in talks with producers Allu Aravind and Madhu Mantena about a sequel to the hit 2008 film ‘Ghajini’. Earlier reports suggest that the producers have pitched an idea to Aamir, who has requested a developed storyboard before moving forward. Meanwhile, Allu Aravind plans to produce ‘Ghajini 2’ in Tamil with Suriya as the lead actor, and Suriya has now confirmed this in a recent conversation.

2. A brand new poster of The Raja Saab movie was shared on the birthday of Prabhas (23 Oct) : The Raja Saab is an upcoming romantic comedy horror film written and directed by Maruthi. It is produced by People Media Factory. The film stars Prabhas in the titular role, alongside Nidhhi Agerwal, and Malavika Mohanan in lead roles. It will be release in April 2025.

1. Recently India’s fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN : Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear), referred to as S4, was launched into water at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam.

(a) S4 features about 75% of indigenous content.

(b) It is armed exclusively with K-4 nuclear ballistic missiles, which have a range of 3,500Km.

(c) The K-4 will be mainstay of India’s undersea nuclear deterrence as it provides standoff capability to launch nuclear weapons while submerged in Indian waters.

(d) Currently, India has two SSBNs operational: INS Arihant (commissioned in 2016) and INS Arighaat (commissioned in 2024). The third SSBN Aridhman is undergoing sea trials and is expected to be commissioned into service next year.

2. Conference for Swavlamban 2024, the third edition of the Indian Navy’s Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) Seminar, took place in New Delhi on October 22, 2024. Chaired by Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Vice Chief of Naval Staff (VCNS), the event highlighted the Navy’s commitment to showcasing significant advancements in innovation.

3. India’s acquisition of the INS Chakra-III, a nuclear-powered attack submarine from Russia, has encountered significant delays, primarily due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the resulting Western sanctions on Russia. Originally slated for delivery in 2025, the submarine is now expected to join the Indian Navy no earlier than 2028.

4. The Vayu Veer Vijeta car rally by the Indian Air Force and Uttarakhand War Memorial arrived in Guwahati yesterday evening. In a move to boost morale of the air warriors, the Chief of Air Staff , Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh is also drived a vehicle from Hashimara to Guwahati.
