1. IMD says, severe cyclonic storm Dana likely to hit Odisha coast on Thursday night; All schools in 14 coastal and neighboring districts to remain closed for three days from today.

The severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is gaining strength in the Bay of Bengal and is heading towards the Odisha coast at 4 km per hour, with a landfall expected on the intervening night of this Thursday and Friday.

2. President Smt Droupadi Murmu conferred the 5th National Water Awards 2023 in New Delhi yesterday. The awards were presented to 38 winners in nine categories. This includes Best State, Best District, Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best Water User Association and Best Civil Society.

3. Filing of nominations begins for second phase of Assembly elections in Jharkhand and single phase election in Maharashtra.

Voting for Jharkhand’s second phase and Maharashtra will be held on the 20th of next month. In Jharkhand, thirty-eight constituencies will go to polls in this phase, while in Maharashtra, polling will take place for all 288 Assembly seats. Counting of votes will be taken up on 23rd November.

4. In Kerala, campaigning is in full swing in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency and also in the two Assembly constituencies of Chelakkara (Reserved) and Palakkad, where bypolls are scheduled to take place on the 13th of next month. Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi is contesting from Wayanad, NDA’s Navya Haridas and LDF candidate Sathyan Mokeri will file their nomination papers.

5. Amid the deteriorating air quality in Delhi and the NCR region, the Delhi Government has urged the Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan governments to consider banning the entry of diesel buses from their respective states into the national capital.

6. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru in-charge minister D.K. Shivakumar said that the heavy downpour has led to waterlogging in parts of Bengaluru, and the civic agencies, along with NDRF and SDRF teams, are working round the clock to ease the situation.

7. Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Singh Choudhary has said that the government is committed to catalyzing various youth initiatives for creating a vibrant ecosystem for honing the technical skills of youth so that they can set up their income-generating units and create jobs for others as well.

8. Road Transport and Highways Ministry has approved 50 National Highway projects of over one thousand kilometer length in Manipur. Out of this, 44 projects of 902 kilometer length lie in the hills of the State. The Ministry said, eight projects for 125 kilometer have been completed and balance 36 projects of 12 thousand crore rupees are in progress.

9. The Department of Medical Oncology at JIPMER, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research’s Breast Cancer Survival Study (ICMR-BCSS), organised a marathon in Puducherry. The event was part of the Pink October celebrations, dedicated to raise awareness about breast cancer, its early detection, and treatment options.

10. Telangana government has launched ‘Power Ambulances’, a fleet of special vehicles to handle emergency power restoration services. These ambulances will operate in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits.

Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the upgraded ‘e-Shram: One Stop Solution’ portal, aimed at enhancing access to social security schemes for over 300 million unorganised workers in India. The initiative consolidates data from various central ministries into a single repository, simplifying the registration process and ensuring that potential beneficiaries are identified state and district-wise.

12. The first anniversary of Namo Bharat train operations was celebrated as Namo Bharat Diwas in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in India’s transportation history.

13. The government on Tuesday issued orders transferring the management of the Dharani portal from the private company Terracess to the National Informatics Centre (NIC), a Central government organisation.

14. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) released list of 45 candidates on Tuesday. According to the MNS list of candidates, Amit Thackeray, son of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, will contest elections from the Mahim assembly constituency in Mumbai.

15. Ajay Kumar Singh, a senior IPS officer, has been appointed as the new Director General of Police (DGP) for Jharkhand. His selection comes from a panel of three IPS officers recommended by the State Government, following the Election Commission’s order for the immediate removal of acting DGP Anurag Gupta.

1. Joint Committee of Parliament on Waqf (Amendment) Bill 2024 has suspended TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee from attending the meeting of the panel for a day. The decision has been taken following his unruly behavior during the panel’s meeting at Parliament House yesterday.

2. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and National Conference President Dr. Farooq Abdullah has lashed out at Pakistan for perpetrating terror attacks in the union territory. The former J&K Chief Minister said the attack at Gagangir was a painful incident as it led to killing of poor people who had come to Kashmir to earn their livelihood.

3. Kerala’s Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) has launched the Citizen Sentinel mobile application, empowering citizens to actively participate in ensuring road safety. The app allows users to report traffic violations in real time by capturing photos or videos of infractions and uploading them for review by enforcement officials.

4. Nearly 80 domestic and international flights received bomb threats in less than 24 hours that later turned out to be hoaxes, keeping thousands of passengers and security agencies on tenterhooks.

5. In response to the stand taken by the National Commission for the Protection of Children’s Rights (NCPCR) against the Madarsa education system, the Supreme Court on Tuesday (October 22) asked it if it has taken the same stand against similar institutions of other religions as well.

Pointing out that there are similar institutions where children of other religions join for religious studies and priestly training, the Court asked why the NCPCR was “only concerned with the Madarsas” and sought to know if it was “even-handed” in treating all communities alike.

1. Jr NTR’s Devara Part 1 movie can be streamed online on November 8 on the famous OTT platform Netflix, as its digital rights are with this platform.

1. Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi emphasized that restoring trust between the India and China is a critical prerequisite for advancing the disengagement process between the two nations.

2. Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) met with Matar Salem Ali Al Dhaheri, Under Secretary of the UAE Ministry of Defence, where they discussed key issues related to defence ties, maritime security in the region, capacity building, increasing interoperability, and collaborations in the defence industry. Admiral Tripathi is currently on his first official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from October 21 to 24, 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance maritime cooperation between the two countries.

3. Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Tuesday said the naval force was happy to learn about India and China reaching an agreement on patrolling along the LAC in eastern Ladakh as he underlined that in national security issues, it is “not easy” to come to any kind of a settlement.
