✈ *INTERNATIONAL NEWS*

1. Prime Minister Modi attended the 19th East Asia Summit (EAS) on 11 October 2024 in Vientiane, 🇱🇦Lao PDR. In his address, PM stressed on ASEAN’s central role in the Indo-Pacific regional architecture, in India’s Indo-Pacific Vision and in Quad cooperation.

2. India and 🇱🇦Lao PDR signed six MoUs and agreements in various fields including defence cooperation, customs, audio-visual, and preservation of heritage. India also decided to provide one million US dollar financial assistance to Laos through the India-UN Development Partnership Fund for a project to improve nutrition security. The MoUs were exchanged in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Sonexay Siphandone in Vientiane.

3. India has dismissed reported claims made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding a significant discussion with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Vientiane, Lao PDR. According to official sources, no substantive talks occurred between the two leaders. India reiterated its concern over ongoing Khalistani activities on Canadian soil and called for decisive action against those involved in promoting violence, extremism, and terrorism.

4. In Bangladesh, a crown of goddess Kali at the Jeshoreshwari Temple in Satkhira was stolen. In a social media post, the High Commission of India in Bangladesh said that the crown was gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in March 2021 during his visit to Bangladesh. The High Commission has expressed deep concern and urged the government of Bangladesh to recover the crown and take action against the perpetrators.

5. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, along with the National Regulatory Authority of India and affiliated institutions have met the international standards for vaccine regulations set by the World Health Organisation (WHO). Union Health Ministry said, a team of international experts from various countries led by WHO headquarters in Geneva reviewed India’s vaccine regulatory system last month.

1. Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese group of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, has won the Nobel Peace Prize 2024. The group also known as Hibakusha was recognised for its tireless efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again.

2. India has expressed concern over the situation in Lebanon. Tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border have escalated dramatically as Israeli forces targeted the main base of the United Nations Interim Force in 🇱🇧Lebanon for the second time in two days. More from our West Asia correspondent.

3. In Sri Lanka, a total of 690 nominations from recognised political parties and independent groups were accepted nationwide for the General Election.

4. In 🇵🇰Pakistan, at least 20 miners were killed and 8 others were injured when an unidentified armed man attacked a coal mine in the Dukki area of Balochistan province .

5. In the USA, one person is dead and 12 others are trapped 1,000 feet underground inside a gold mine in the state of Colorado.

6. The World Bank has created a special Financial Intermediary Fund (FIF) to help Ukraine as it continues to face challenges from the ongoing war with Russia. Countries like the United States, Canada, and Japan are expected to contribute money.
