Vinai Kumar Saxena, LG of Delhi, last week was vocal about his dissatisfaction over the worsening civic conditions in South Delhi. As part of his inspection of various localities, Saxena came out especially pointing out grave problems including open manholes, uncleared garbage, and general neglect of public places. The leader of Delhi government was also charged with not maintaining the very basic infrastructure and sanitation of the city.
Civic Concerns in South Delhi
In the inspection of many neighbourhoods, the LG found many open manholes, which he considered a serious threat to pedestrians as well as to motorists. With monsoon rains, the chances of accidents are quite high as it causes a threat to residential areas. Along with that, Saxena also drew attention to the piles of garbage scattered across different parts of South Delhi, depicting poor management of waste. These landfills not only make the city look ugly but also harbor health risks for these residents. This opens a wide avenue for this disease to spread freely like dengue fever and malaria.
Public Safety and Cleanliness Issues
According to Saxena, this was an urgent issue, lest it became a source of public health hazard or hygiene issues and critical accidents during the rainy season. Critical accidents were also created due to lack of manhole covers. Garbage collection without checks posed health hazards in themselves by inviting pests and waterlogging. Saxena thus demanded an immediate response from the authorities for clearing the garbage as well as manholes because people’s safety in Delhi was of utmost importance, he averred.
Political Blame Game
The statements from the LG have added fuel to the fire of the political friction between his office and the Delhi government, which is an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime. Saxena has been aggressive with the state government’s failures that count on civic issues and doesn’t make an exemption this time. In response, the Delhi government pointed out that most of these areas are municipal corporations and not areas governed by the state government itself. The result has been a blame game between the two, who, in turn, are accusing each other of neglect of duty.
Public Reaction
Commenting on this issue, residents of South Delhi have expressed different opinions regarding LG’s statement. Most citizens express views of Saxena by demanding better civic infrastructure and sanitation. However, the people think that the LG, as well as the state government, should not point fingers at each other and instead perform well to correct issues that are necessary to be done for the city. Hopefully, all this debate will be concluded with the other issues that are being predominantly debated in South Delhi, namely, safety, cleanliness, and infrastructure, brought into the fray. Cooperation and compromise are imperative factors for the redressal of all long-standing civic concerns if these two bodies will truly work together effectively.
