The limited success of Indian athletes at the Paris Olympics (six medals) has led to massive celebrations in India. From New Delhi to Pune, the medallists have been feted, and, rightly so. However, it is also a time to remember excess celebrations are not going to do good in the long run.

One prime example which should serve as a reminder to all athletes is how the boy from Ambala, Haryana, Sarabjot Singh, has refused a state government job. Brilliant decision this, as Sarabjit knows he has a great future and training for the Los Angeles Olympics (2028) has to begin on time. It is well known, in shooting, an athlete has to mandatorily take a three-month break after prolonged training at high intensity and competitions. Sarabjit will get back. He knows he has to start from scratch with coach Abhishek Rana in Ambala, someone who has guided him for over eight years.

Given the talent, hard work and ethic of Sarabjot, who comes from a humble family, he will train hard. Nothing affects him and it is this dedication which will help Sarabjot peak, again. Life in Indian shooting is not easy. Repeat trials, repeat tests and national camps and competitions, it can be draining. What has been beneficial is repeated trials to test the calibre and mental strength. It was a case of survival of fittest, which has been proved by Sarabjot, as well the bigger star – Manu Bhaker.

Back to Sarabjot, he knows age is on his side. He can get back to the grind and work hard. Shooting is a lonely sport and he has to do it all alone, again and again, rehearsing action. If one has seen the Chinese shooters and Koreans, they perfect shooting as an art and science. In the end, if they look so consistent, it is rehearsal and repeating the motions.

Indeed, for Sarabjot to get over national celebrations and resume training after adequate rest will set an example. The Asian Games in 2026 beckons, leading into the next Olympic cycle in 2028.
