1. PM Modi led the country in paying tributes to the martyrs and freedom fighters on the occasion of 78th Independence day. Addressed the nation after hoisting the national flag from the ramparts of Red Fort in New Delhi yesterday (on 15 August).

2. The Prime Minister highlighted landmark initiatives announced by the government to train country’s youths and become the skill capital of the world. He envisioned transforming India into a global manufacturing hub and called for preparing future ready skilled resources to meet the expectations of the fast paced development.

3. The Prime Minister also expressed concern at the rising cases of violence and crimes against women. He said, the perpetrators should be punished and brought to book at the earliest.

4. The third developmental flight of SSLV will be launched today morning at 09.17 A.M from the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota. This flight completes the SSLV development project and enables operational missions by Indian Industry and NSIL. The Countdown will begin six hours before the launch. The small satellite launch vehicle is capable of launching Mini, Micro and Nano satellites weighing 10 to 500 kilograms.

5. PM Modi advocates a secular civil code in place of the current civil code : The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) proposes a common set of laws for all citizens, regardless of their religion, covering matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, succession, and adoption. The goal is to have secular laws that override religious laws in these areas.

NOTE : Out of 193 member states of the United Nations only eight countries have a Uniform Civil Code – the United States, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, Egypt and Ireland.

6. Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai, who has been selected for a three-month fellowship in the UK, said on Saturday that the party leadership has given him permission for the foreign stint. This development comes amid speculation of a change in leadership in Tamil Nadu following the saffron party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha elections.

7. PM Modi on Thursday made a strong pitch for ‘one nation, one election’ and urged political parties to come forward to realise the dream while contending that frequent polls were creating hurdles in the nation’s progress.

8. The Parsi community of Mumbai celebrated Navroze along with Independence Day yesterday. Navroze which means ‘New Day’ is Parsi New Year Day, when the Parsi families come together, honour their heritage, and embrace new beginnings.

9. The Maharashtra government has officially designated the geoglyphs and petroglyphs in Ratnagiri as protected monuments under the Maharashtra Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1960. This decision responds to growing concerns about preserving these important cultural artifacts.

10. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, during his Independence Day speech on Thursday (August 15, 2024), announced the establishment of Mudhalvarin Marundhagam, pharmacies to provide generic medicines at subsidised rates. A total of 1,000 pharmacies would be made operational from the day of Pongal next year.

11. The Odisha government has introduced a one-day menstrual leave policy for women employees in both the state government and private sector, allowing leave on the first or second day of their cycle to support women’s health. This announcement was made by Odisha Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida during the district-level Independence Day celebrations in Cuttack.

12. VARALAKSHMI VRATH/POOJA is observed on the second Friday or on the Friday just before Poornima (full moon) of Shravan month (Aadi month in the Tamil calendar). It corresponds to the months of July or August on the English calendar. This year it falls on 16 August Friday. Married women keep this sacred Varalakshmi vratam to seek blessings for the entire family, especially their husband and children.

13. Today is SRAVANA PUTRADA EKADASHI . The word ‘Putrada’ means ‘giver of sons’ and hence it is believed that by observing putrada ekadashi fast in the month of Shravan, desires for a male child can be fulfilled

1. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen assets worth Rs 209 crore and seized Rs 55 lakh in cash from Nagpur businessman Manoj Jayaswal entity – Corporate Power Limited (CPL). The ED describes the assets as proceeds of crime (POC) from a loan fraud in which ₹4,000 crore were allegedly diverted from a PSU bank.

2. In West Bengal, the police arrested nine persons out of the 26 people identified in connection with 14 August night vandalism at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Meanwhile, a CBI team reached the spot to investigate the rape and brutal killing of a lady doctor.

3. The Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association has called for a day-long cease-work on Friday to protest the vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has mandated non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) to pay 100 percent of the deposit amount within the first three months of accepting it if the depositor seeks a withdrawal citing an emergency. But the depositor will not get any interest on premature withdrawals.

2. Rana Ashutosh Kumar Singh has been appointed as Managing Director (MD) of SBI, overseeing risk compliance and stressed assets. Gajendra Singh Rana takes over as Deputy Managing Director for retail and real estate. These changes precede CS Setty’s upcoming role as SBI Chairman.

3. The Karnataka government on Wednesday ordered suspension of all transactions with two public sector banks — State Bank of India (SBI) and Punjab National Bank (PNB) — with immediate effect.

According to reports, the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) had deposited 25 crore at the Rajajinagar branch of PNB in November 2012. Following maturity of the deposit term, the bank returned only 13 crore, citing misappropriation of the remaining 12 crore by bank officials. Similarly, in 2013, the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) had deposited 10 crore with State Bank of Mysore at the Avenue Road branch.

STREE 2 : Amar Kaushik’s much-awaited sequel to the 2018 hit horror-comedy film Stree was released in theatres on Independence Day. Starring Shraddha Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee and Pankaj Tripathi in the lead roles.

Stree 2 movie faced stiff competition from Akshay Kumar, Taapsee Pannu-starrer Khel Khel Mein and John Abraham, Sharvari-starrer Vedaa on its opening day.

1. In Kerala, the Flag Officer
in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command Vice Admiral V Srinivas laid a wreath at the War Memorial of the Naval Base in Kochi.

2. India is considering the acquisition of 21 additional MiG-29 fighter jets from Russia. This move is part of a broader strategy to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF) amid ongoing regional tensions, particularly with China.

3. The Indian Army is actively seeking domestic solutions for the procurement of 90 Carrier Air Defence Tracked (CADET) systems. This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Defence, aims to enhance the Army’s air defence capabilities to support mechanized units across various operational environments.

4. Army and police on Thursday paid tributes to Captain Deepak Singh who was killed in an encounter with terrorists in nearby Udhampur district. A search operation to track down the terrorists who fled the site of encounter is underway in Assar belt of Doda district.

5. IPS officer Nalin Prabhat was on Thursday appointed as Special Director General of Jammu and Kashmir Police and will head the force after the retirement of R R Swain on September 30.

6. Dr Ram Narain Agarwal, 84, acclaimed aerospace scientist and Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee who was instrumental in the development of India’s long-range missile Agni, passed away on Thursday at his residence in Hyderabad’s Kanchanbagh.
