India celebrates its 78th Independence Day on Thursday, 15 August, 2024. The day recalls the historical moment of gaining freedom in 1947 after hundreds of years of British rule.

1. The nation will celebrate its 78th Independence Day today. PM Modi will lead the Nation in celebrating the Independence Day from the historic Red Fort in Delhi. He will host the National Flag and address the nation from the ramparts of the iconic monument. The theme of this year’s Independence Day is Viksit Bharat @ 2047.

2. On the eve of Independence Day, President Smt Droupadi Murmu addressed the nation yesterday.

President Murmu emphasizes that India is moving together as a cohesive nation with diversity and plurality;
President appreciates contribution of farmers, workers, visionary planners and wealth-creators in the journey of nation’s development.

3. President Smt Droupadi Murmu has approved 103 Gallantry awards to Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces personnel on the eve of Independence Day. These are four Kirti Chakras including three posthumous, 18 Shaurya Chakras including four posthumous and one Bar to Sena Medal (Gallantry). Among the Gallantry awards are 63 Sena Medals (Gallantry) including two posthumous, 11 Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry) and six Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).

The President has also approved 39 Mention-in-Despatches, including posthumously to Army Dog Kent, for their significant contributions in different military operations. The President also approved President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services and Police Medal for Meritorious Service.

4. Yesterday was the Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. It commemorates the victims and sufferings of people during the Partition of India in 1947. In a social media post, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalled the countless people who were impacted and greatly suffered due to the horrors of Partition.

5. The Congress on Wednesday fielded senior Supreme Court lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi as the party candidate to contest the by-election to the Rajya Sabha from Telangana. Elections for 12 vacant Rajya Sabha seats in nine states will be held on September 3.

6. The Manipur government is expected to soon hold peace talks with teams representing the Thadou, Paite, and Hmar communities caught in the ethnic conflict between the non-tribal Meitei and the tribal Kuki-Zomi people since May 2023.

7. The National Testing Agency, NTA has rescheduled the UGC NET June 2024 examination of 26th August to 27th August.

8. A total of 250 farmers have been invited as special guests who have benefitted from the Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi. These invitees represent the millions of farmers whose lives have been positively impacted by the government’s direct income support.

9. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has emphasized the importance of safeguarding the nation’s integrity and called on the citizens to participate in the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign with fervor. Mr Naidu highlighted the significance of flying the national flag at every home.

10. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has expressed gratitude to the people of Tripura for blessing the BJP with a historic victory in the local body elections.

11. The process for registration of Haj-2025 has started. People can apply till the 9th of next month. Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju along with Minister of State for Minority Affairs George Kurian launched the Haj Application-2025 in New Delhi.

12. President Smt Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the Amrit Udyan Summer Annuals 2024 at Rashtrapati Bhavan yesterday. It will open to the public from Friday and visitors can visit it till 15th September.

13. The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has gained notable recognition in the 2024 National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings. It has moved up to 12th place in the top 100 overall category.

14. Security has been intensified in Kashmir and Jammu divisions to ensure incident-free Independence Day celebrations, with a multi-tier security set put in place at the venue of the main function—the Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar.

15. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy will visit Khammam district on Thursday after hoisting the National Flag at the Golconda Fort on the Independence Day.Later in the day, Revanth Reddy will inaugurate the Sitarama Lift Irrigation Project in Pusugudem and proceed to Wyra to address a farmers’ rally after completing the crop loan waiver scheme by releasing funds to waive crop loans of farmers up to Rs 2 lakh each.

16. A 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service officer (IRS) officer Rahul Navin appointed as new Enforcement Directorate (ED) Director.

17. Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu would launch the Anna Canteens at a state-level event in Gudivada on Independence Day on Thursday, fulfilling Telugu Desam’s election promise of offering subsidised food to the needy @ Rs.5. Under this scheme, 100 Anna Canteens would be started in the first phase this week.

18. Shri Sandeep Poundrik has officially taken over as the Secretary of the Ministry of Steel, succeeding in his role at Udyog Bhawan.

19. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on August 14 named Govind Mohan as the next Home Secretary, effective from 22 August.

20. Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2024 will be celebrated on Friday, August 16. This significant Hindu festival is observed by couples seeking offspring. Fasting with devotion is believed to invoke Lord Vishnu’s blessings for progeny and spiritual growth.

1. The Apex Court yesterday refused interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case linked to the national capital’s now scrapped liquor policy. The court sought the CBI’s reply on the Aam Aadmi Party leader’s bail plea and posted the matter for 23rd of August.

The AAP chief was arrested by CBI on 26th of June, while he was in custody of the Enforcement Directorate in the money laundering case arising out of the alleged liquor policy scam.

2. In West Bengal, health care services at all the medical colleges and hospitals remain hampered due to the strike of junior and resident doctors over the Kolkata doctor’s murder incident. Senior doctors are also participating in the protest. Emergency and OPD services are partially functioning.

3. BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi on Tuesday attacked his attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for not transferring the case of rape and murder of a doctor at state-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital to the CBI. He also directed his attack on the INDIA alliance leaders, questioning the silence of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.

4. A 16-year-old schoolboy was beaten to death allegedly by Maoists in a village in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district apparently on suspicion he was a police informer.

Initial investigation suggested Shankar, studying in a government school in Palnar area of adjoining Dantewada district, had come to Puvarti after the death of a female member of the family following delivery complications around a week ago.

1. The Karnataka government has ordered all its departments, boards, corporations, public sector units and universities to withdraw all their deposits and investments in the State Bank of India and the Punjab National Bank and stop transacting any business with these institutions.

The order came after the denial to redeem Rs 12 crore deposited by the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) following a scam involving bank employees.

The Kerala State Film Awards for the year 2023 are all set to be announced on August 16. Officials at the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, which organises the awards, said that the jury, headed by veteran director Sudhir Mishra, will conduct the screening of the films that entered the final round on August 15.

1. The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday conferred two fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force with Shaurya Chakra, the second-highest Gallantry award of peacetime.

(a) Wing Commander (Wg Cdr) VD Keane recovered his Jaguar fighter aircraft safely on 24 Jul, 2023. During a sortie on Jaguar fighter aircraft, he experienced unprecedented Oil 1 and Oil 2 failure warnings. The warning indicated a major oil system malfunction warranting immediate shutdown of both engines to prevent their imminent seizure.

The pilot while displaying superlative flying skills, controlled the aircraft, turned away to prevent loss of civilian life and property in case of a probable ejection and jettisoned empty fuel tanks clear of populated area. He simultaneously decided to attempt to relight on the left engine and successfully revived it. He then deftly controlled and recovered the aircraft safely off a single engine.

The officer was also conferred with Vayu Sena Medal (VM) Gallantry in 2018 when as a Squadron Leader he recovered his aircraft when his fighter had also faced twin-engine fire.

(b) Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) Deepak Kumar saved Kiran’s training aircraft along with his and the trainee pilot’s life. He was on an instructional night sortie when he displayed exceptional courage in a life-threatening situation. While on the posted strength of Air Force Station Hakimpet, on 25 Aug, 2023.

2. Indian Army’s Colonel Manpreet Singh, who lost his life in a confrontation with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district last September, has been posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra on this Independence Day.

Along with the colonel, Rifleman Ravi Kumar (posthumous), Major Malla Rama Gopal Naidu, Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Himayun Muzzammil Bhatt (posthumous) were also honoured with the Kirti Chakra.

3. India has carried out a “successful” maiden flight test of long-range glide bomb (LRGB) GAURAV from a Su-30 MK-I fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

The test was conducted off the coast of Odisha. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the IAF and the industry for the successful flight test of the glide bomb.

4. The Indian Army’s Aviation Corps is still awaiting the delivery of the first batch of Apache AH-64E attack helicopters from the United States. Originally, six helicopters were planned to arrive in batches of three. The first batch was expected between May and June. However, the helicopters have yet to reach India, leaving the Army’s first Apache Squadron in anticipation.

5. An Army Capital from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday during a search operation in the Assar belt of Doda district in Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter broke out in a dense forested area during a cordon and search operation (CASO) launched by a joint team to track down a group of foreign terrorists hiding in the Shivgarh-Assar belt.
